Reverse Diet Literacy: Coming Out of a Cut Without Chaos

What reverse dieting means for lifters after a deficit — slow calorie climb, training quality, hunger, and how it differs from a dirty bulk or a one-day refeed.

A reverse diet is a deliberate climb from a deficit toward maintenance (and sometimes into a small surplus) so hunger, training, and hormones-of-stress stop living in the red. It is not magic metabolic witchcraft. It is not a license to erase three months of patience in one weekend.

TL;DR

Definitions

Term Meaning
Reverse diet Gradual intake increase after a deficit
Diet break Hold near maintenance mid-cut
Refeed Short higher day inside a cut
Lean bulk Small surplus aimed at growth — lean bulk
Dirty bulk Uncontrolled surplus

When a reverse earns the slot

  • Cut done (you hit a waist/photo goal or adherence is cooked)
  • Lifts flat, cold, hungry, sleep trash
  • You want to grow next without ballooning overnight

If you’re still happily losing on a moderate deficit with good training, you don’t need a reverse yet.

A simple approach (not a prescription)

  1. Estimate current average intake.
  2. Bump ~50–150 kcal/day (often carbs) once or twice a week — carbs around training.
  3. Hold protein — protein targets · meal structure.
  4. Watch 7-day scale average + waist + gym performance.
  5. When weight stabilises near maintenance and sessions feel alive, either hold or tip into lean surplus.

Hunger noise while reversing is normal — don’t panic-eat the pantry every night — hunger on a cut skills still help.
