Lifts stall. That’s normal. What’s not normal is treating every flat week like a personality crisis and downloading a new program before you’ve checked sleep. This is the boring checklist I’d run before blaming genetics or buying another tub.
TL;DR
- Confirm it’s a real plateau (weeks of flat like-for-like sets), not one bad Tuesday.
- Fix sleep → food → stress/steps → deload → effort honesty before program surgery.
- Program hops feel productive; they’re often avoidance — ego lifting.
- Supplements don’t unstick a recovery problem. Creatine helps training quality; it isn’t a plateau spell — Muscle Nation creatine monohydrate.
Step 0 — Is it actually stuck?
Open the logbook. For your main lifts:
- Same (or worse) load × reps at similar RIR (reps in reserve) for 3+ weeks?
- Or did life explode and you missed half your sessions — how many days?
Missed sessions aren’t a plateau. They’re a schedule problem.
The checklist (in order)
1. Sleep
Protect a window most nights — sleep for lifters. Four hours + max effort is cosplay. Late caffeine? Caffeine dose.
2. Food (especially protein and fuel)
- Hitting a practical protein range? — protein targets
- In a hard cut with no training carbs? — carbs around training · cutting
- “Hunger noise” vs under-eating — hunger on a cut
3. Stress and steps
Life stress taxes recovery like volume does — stress and lifting. Zero steps + desk day + hard lower isn’t “saving energy” — walking · rest days.
4. Deload before you reinvent the split
Drop volume ~30% for a week, keep some intensity if you like, sleep — deload week. Many “plateaus” were accumulated fatigue wearing a trench coat.
5. Effort honesty
Sandbagging at fake “3 RIR” forever stalls you. Daily absolute failure stalls you differently. Calibrate — RPE / RIR. Warm up enough that work sets aren’t surprise grinders — warmup.
6. Then — and only then — program tweaks
| Tweak | When |
|---|---|
| Add a small set on a lagging pattern | Recovery is clearly fine |
| Swap a variation (e.g. incline vs flat) | Joint irritation, not boredom |
| Move full body → upper/lower | You’ve earned volume — upper / lower |
| New influencer split | Almost never week-one of a stall |
What not to buy as a “fix”
- Thermogenic fairy dust
- Mystery pre that hides caffeine — pre without hype
- Forum “blast through the plateau” pharmacology — literacy only, no sourcing — PED hub · forum lore vs clinical care
Legal basics that still make sense as training nutrition: daily creatine, protein convenience if food is awkward — creatine for older lifters if age is the lane · Muscle Nation whey isolate.
