You don’t need a barcode scanner personality to get into shape. Apps help some people. They also become procrastination with decimal places. If tracking makes you consistent, cool. If it makes you avoid dinner, use structure instead: repeatable meals, protein on the plate, carbs near training.

TL;DR

  • Default: 3–4 meals (or 2 bigger + 1 shake) you could run on a workday.
  • Each meal: protein anchor + carb and/or fat + plants for volume.
  • Bias carbs toward the training window when sessions feel flat — carbs around training.
  • Powder is convenience, not a personality — whey vs food · Muscle Nation whey isolate.

Hand-portion cheat sheet (good enough)

Need Rough visual
Protein 1–2 palm-sized portions per meal
Carbs 1–2 cupped hands (more on hard training days)
Fats 1–2 thumbs (oils, nuts, cheese, fatty cuts)
Volume veg Fist(s) — hunger management without living on air

Adjust up for larger humans / hard training, down in a deeper cut — cutting guide. This isn’t clinical nutrition advice; it’s a starting scaffold.

A boring day that works

Example: train 5–6 pm

Slot Job Example
Breakfast Protein + some carbs Eggs or yoghurt + fruit/oats
Lunch Protein + carbs + veg Chicken/beef/tofu + rice + salad
Pre-lift snack Fuel Banana + yoghurt, or leftovers
Post / dinner Protein + carbs Same template; bigger if hungry from the session
Optional Gap filler Shake when food is awkward

Lean bulk? Nudge portions up slowly — lean bulk basics. Cut? Shrink leisure snacks and liquid calories before you strip training carbs — hunger on a cut.

Rules that beat macro theatre

  1. Decide dinner before you’re starving. Default meals remove 9 pm chaos.
  2. Repeat breakfasts and lunches. Variety can live at dinner.
  3. Protein first on the plate. Then carbs. Then extras.
  4. Eat out with a plan: protein + potato/rice + veg; dessert as a choice, not a trance.
  5. Weigh progress weekly, not meal-to-meal panic.

When an app is useful

  • You genuinely have no idea how much you’re eating
  • Contest / tight phase where precision matters and you’re already consistent
  • Short educational audit (2 weeks), then return to structure

If the app owns your mood, delete it and come back to this page.
