Scope: Muscle-gain nutrition · Yeh Bro System.
A lean bulk is not a personality based on pizza. It’s a small surplus with training that actually progresses — then you stay patient longer than the algorithm wants.
TL;DR
- Add roughly ~10% above maintenance (or enough to gain slowly).
- Keep protein in a lifter range — protein targets.
- Push progressive overload on a schedule you can recover from.
- If the waist races ahead of the logbook, the surplus is too loud.
Who should bulk
Bulk when:
- You’re training consistently (often 3–4 days — frequency guide)
- Sleep isn’t trashed
- You’ve finished a cut or you’re already at a body-fat level you’re happy to grow from
If you’re new and under-muscled at a higher body fat, a long recomp (maintenance calories + hard training) can be smarter than a dirty surplus. Honesty beats ego.
Surplus without the dirty bulk
| Lever | Practical call |
|---|---|
| Calories | ~+250–400 kcal/day for many, or ~10% over maintenance |
| Gain rate | Slow — think modest monthly scale change, not a holiday |
| Protein | ~1.6–2.2 g/kg |
| Carbs | Fuel the lifts; this is where most surplus often goes |
| Fats | Enough for hormones/food enjoyment — not the only surplus lever |
Adjust from the trend: strength up, measurements/photos, waist. Scale alone lies with water, creatine, and salt — creatine myths.
Training is the point
Food without progressive overload is just expensive soft tissue.
- Keep a simple split — full body or Upper/Lower
- Add load or reps over weeks
- Deload when needed — deload week
- Walk so NEAT doesn’t collapse into pure sedentary surplus — walking
Appetite and convenience
Some people struggle to eat enough. Then:
- Add calorie-dense sides (rice, oils, dairy, nut butters) instead of force-feeding junk only
- Use a shake to fill protein/calorie gaps — whey vs food · /go/protein-true
- Creatine remains the boring daily scoop — /go/creatine-true
When to stop the bulk
- Waist and body fat climbing faster than strength
- Sleep apnea / health markers worrying you — see a clinician
- You care more about a look for a date than another training block — pivot to maintenance or a controlled cut (cutting guide)
Phased culture education (later, optional): blueprint lean bulk. That’s literacy — not a cue to escalate pharmacology.
