Protein scoop economics (Australia)

Compare AU protein tubs by $ per 25 g protein — not tub size marketing. Whey, WPI, and when isolate is worth it.

Published

Flavour fights are entertainment. Scoop maths decides who wins.

TL;DR: Divide tub price by (serves × protein grams per serve), then normalise to $ per 25 g protein. That’s the fair fight in AUD.

The formula

$ / 25 g protein = (tub price AUD ÷ total protein grams in tub) × 25

Or: price ÷ serves ÷ protein-per-serve × 25.

Do it on the label in front of you. Promotions change weekly.

What to read on the label

  • Protein per serve (as sold, not fantasy “dry basis” games)
  • Serve size in grams
  • Serves per container
  • Added sugars / junk if that matters for your cut

Lactose wrecks you? Isolate (WPI) can be worth the premium. That’s a gut call, not a detox — full comparison: Whey concentrate vs isolate.

Example framing (illustrative)

Tub type What usually wins
Big WPC bag on sale Often best $/25 g
Premium WPI Worth it for lactose or lean macros — not ego
“Mass gainer” Cheap calories; not the same as protein economics

Don’t

  • Chase “best protein in the world” with no criteria
  • Treat powder as a steroid substitute
  • Ignore food protein — powder is convenience, not magic
